Monasterio De San Francisco - Santo Domingo
Dominican Republic

The Monastery of Saint Francis was built on a hill overlooking the entrance to the city by Alsonso de Espinar and Rodrigo de Liendo in 1556. The lovely "plateresque" doorway features the cordon of Saint Francis carved in stone around the order's coat of arms. The chapel of the third order is the best example of Spanish architecture in Santo Domingo; it appears to have been built in the 18th century. In 1885, Francisco X Billini converted the building into a lunatic asylum, and in modern times it has been abandoned.

The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two countries.
