擎天崗草原自清領末期形成草原以來就是最佳的放牧牛隻牧場，農民稱為"牛埔"，為台北盆地及金山、萬里等附近農家農閒時耕牛寄養處所，除水牛外本草原也曾寄養過黃牛、神戶黑牛、羊、戰馬...等。
