當位於地底深處的岩層，漸漸地暴露到地表時，由於壓力減小，使得有些岩石產生了裂痕，因此岩石和空氣與水的接觸面積增加，慢慢地使岩石因內部的化學成分發生變化，或受到熱漲冷縮的物理作用，變為疏鬆而破碎，最後甚至變成沙、泥和土壤，這種作用便稱為風化作用。
