魚路古道是何時就有的，許多人皆無法提出有力的證據，只是約莫聽到「日據時期就有了」，「清朝就有了」，「唐山過台灣就有了」，諸如此類的話。因為魚路古道並不像台灣其他的古道，有確切的開鑿日期，因此對於年代的考證倍感棘手。從所能得到的文字證據中發現，至少在清朝乾隆年間（1736-1795）已有此條路線，當然，那時不叫魚路古道，只是部落之間便捷的山徑而已。較可靠的文獻記載：魚路古道為光緒二十九年所修建士林到金包里(金山鄉)的道路。
