海浪不停地掏刷海崖，時間一久，海崖逐漸崩退，形成與海平面近乎同高度的平坦岩台，這種地形就稱為海蝕平台，將其切開來看，可發現像一塊3層的夾心蛋糕，第一層稱為蕈狀石層，由上部厚約2公尺的鈣質砂岩，下部黃褐色砂岩主成；第二層為薑石層，由上部內含不規則塊石的砂岩，下部黃褐色砂岩主成；第三層為燭台石層，砂岩內含球狀塊石。這些包藏在地層中的鈣質砂岩及塊石，質地堅硬，在地質學上稱為「結核」，是造就千奇百怪石雕奇景的關鍵。
