Clayton Church, West Sussex
Brighton-Hove

St John the Baptist's Church, Clayton

The church at Clayton in West Sussex, just a few miles north of Brighton originally dates to the Anglo-Saxon period. The present is largely of Norman construction, with additions of a porticus in the 12th and 13th centuries, and a porch and belfry in the 15th. The chancel was reconstructed in the 19th century. Possibly the most impressive feature of the church are its 11th century wall paintings on the walls of the nave and over the chancel arch. They depict the Day of Judgement, Christ in Majesty, the Hevenly Jerusalem and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. St John the Baptist's is one of the Sussex churches of the 'Lewes Group', all known for their murals. Others include Hardham, Amberley, Coombes and Plumpton.
