Fishing Vessel Hotspur at the Small Boat Harbor in Valdez, Alaska
Alaska

Temporarily docked in Valdez, the fishing vessel Hotspur, of Juneau, Alaska is a longliner that typically fishes for halibut and sablefish (black cod). Longliners use long lines (usually 183 meters / 600 feet) that have baited hooks at regular intervals. The line is put in the water for up to a day then winched aboard where the fish that were caught are individually inspected, cleaned and cooled for storage. Longliners can be identified by their hydraulic line pullers, the open work decks, buoys tied to the stern and often plastic tubs holding lengths of fishing line.

Valdez Harbor is operated by the City of Valdez and has 511 slips and almost 1000 feet of transient dock space. The harbor offers almost any service a fishing boat or recreational vessel might require.

The terminus of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and deep water port for loading oil tankers is to the south, directly opposite the small boat harbor.
