Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, Doylestown, Pennsylvania USA
Philadelphia
The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works is a historic property operated by the Bucks County, Pennsylvania Department of Parks and Recreation. It is located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania at 130 East Swamp Road. It is a living history museum operated as a functional pottery factory in a manner similar to the original factory. The original factory was founded and built by Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) between 1898 and 1930. Mercer was a major proponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement in America that was led by the American artist and writer William Morris (1834-1896). Mercer is well known for his research and books about ancient tool making. His ceramic tile business was highly successful and his tiles were used in the floor of the Pennsylvania State Capital Building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Mercer was one of the founders of the Bucks County Historical Society. The building is construction entirely from reinforced concrete.
