The Southern Sierra contains some of the highest mountains in the country, including the highest in the lower 48: Mt. Whitney. The Pacific Crest Trail is a dusty, dry venture up to this point, until a few miles from here it pares off into the lake-filled, river-running wonderland of the High Sierra.
