Der Wächtersteich und der Bernhardsthaler Teich sind die am höchsten gelegenen und noch am besten erhaltenen Flößerteiche im Thüringer Wald. Bereits zwischen 1574 - 1579 wurden vom damaligen Burgvogt von Saalfeld überall Teiche angelegt, um den Fluss Steinach flößbar zu machen. In den ersten Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts erneuerte man die Teiche. Sie gaben das erforderliche Zuschusswasser an die Steinach ab, um die Flößerei zu ermöglichen. Die meisten Teiche sind bis zum heutigen Tage erhalten geblieben. Der Wächtersteich besitzt einen Stauinhalt von 3000m³ Wasser.
