Five Ram Sculpture, Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou

The Five Ram Sculpture is located in Yuexiu Park in the centre of Guangzhou. Yuexiu Park is the largest park in down town Guangzhou, covering an area of 860,000 square meters (212.5 acres). It is made up of three artificial lakes, and seven mountains, all part of Yue Xiu Mountain. The sculpture is one of the most famous structures in Guangzhou and is one of the city emblems. Legend has it that more than 2,000 years ago, the city was a barren land with people, who despite hard work were suffering from famine. Then five immortals came to Guangzhou from the South China Sea. Their clothes were in five colours and they were riding on five rams in different colours. In the mouth of each of the rams there was a sheaf of six rice heads. The immortals sent this to the local residents and wished them free from famine for ever. After that the immortals flew away while the five rams were left and turned into stone rams. The sculpture is 11m (36 feet) high and it volume is 53 cubic meters (69 cubic yards). It was carved from more than 130 blocks of granite. Through out the park and all over Guangzhou are many of the Bombax trees or more commonly known as Red Silk Cotton Tree, in full bloom and a sure sign it is spring. The park is easily accessed from the Guangzhou Metro Line 2.
