The museum’s collections showcase the international importance of Liverpool as a major gateway to the world. Opened in 1980 and further expanded in 1986, the museum is located at the Albert Dock, occupying warehouse block D.

It also houses the former HM Customs & Excise National Museum, now a gallery located in the basement, and contains one of the most important collections of its type held anywhere in the world.

Across the Canning Halftide Dock can be seen the "Three Graces" of Liverpool.
