Die Weser (Niederdeutsch Werser oder Wersern) ist ein Strom, der in nördlicher Richtung die Mittelgebirgsschwelle und das norddeutsche Tiefland durchfließt. Seinen Namen trägt er ab Hann. Münden, wo sich seine beiden großen Quellflüsse, Werra und Fulda, vereinigen. Bei Bremerhaven mündet die Weser in die Nordsee.Die Weser ist in ganzer Länge Bundeswasserstraße[2] und berührt die Bundesländer Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen und Bremen. Anteil an ihrem Einzugsgebiet haben außerdem Thüringen und Sachsen-Anhalt.Die gemeinsame Herkunft der Flussnamen Weser und Werra weist darauf hin, dass die heutige Werra einst als Oberlauf der Weser galt, die größere, aber kürzere Fulda dagegen nur als Nebenfluss. Die Trennung der Namen Weser und Werra entstand erst im Frühneuhochdeutschen.
