Sassnitz is both a seaside resort and an important fishing harbour on the island of Rügen. The pier of Sassnitz is the longest harbour pier in the Baltic. Sassnitz was the first seaside resort on Rügen. Theodor Fontane, the famous German Poet wrote: “To travel to Rügen is to travel to Sassnitz.”
