凌雲禪寺建於民國29年，規模宏大雄偉，寺中主要奉祀的，正是千手觀音。相傳它是由寶海法師創建，本圓法師接任住持後，更提升了格局，也奠定了凌雲禪寺在佛教界的地位，過去還曾有台灣佛教「四大重鎮」之一的稱呼。

依著觀音山壁建立的凌雲禪寺，地勢陡峭，面臨著的是一片空幽的山谷，卻也因而視野絕佳，天氣好的時候，還能在此看見大冠鷲的芳蹤。
沿著凌雲路繼續往上走，就可以到達楞嚴閣與開山院。這兩座相距不遠的寺院，都是弘法、清修之地，有「子母院」之稱。兩座寺院都是以觀音山石打造，其中楞嚴閣的建築融合了印度式、巴洛克式及閩南式風格；開山院則是仿印度天竺式建築，兩者都是台灣少見的寺廟形式，值得一看。
