Mud-brick structure, Hermopolis
Egypt

These three linked panoramas of Hermopolis are among the less photogenic, but quite interesting for what they show.

This view, from atop an ancient mud-brick structure that would have been up to 5 stories high, shows us what most archaeological sites look like in Egypt (and most of the world) — there just isn't much to see above ground. One reason is that most structures built in pharaonic times were made from mud brick, which was cheap and sturdy, though not designed to withstand the ravages of time. Archaeologists and Egyptologists have found much below ground, however — Hermopolis was one of antiquity's major cities, and the place where the world began, according to the Ogdoad creation myth.
