Porsgrunnselva constitutes the lower part of the waterfall in Telemark. The river starts in Skien city, at the Telemark Canal's first sluice, and flows through Porsgrunn before it flows into the Frierfjord by Herøya. Average annual water supply to Skienselva at the outskirts of Norsjø is 263 m³/s.
