Battle of Hastings battlefield, East Sussex
England

This unassuming field, named Senlac Hill, in the Sussex countryside was the scene of one of the most significant battles in English history - the Battle of Hastings. The battle between William, Duke of Normandy and the Anglo-Saxon King Harold II took place on 14 October 1066 with the Norman invader emerging the victor. Henceforth he became known as William the Conqueror. Harold’s name endures through the legend that he died from an arrow in the eye, although this may be a myth.

The story of the battle and quest for the English Crown is told in detail on the Bayeux Tapestry.
