Monastery of Batalha, Aerial view

The Monastery of Batalha is ordered to be built by King D. João I in honor of the Virgin Mary after the victory over the Castilian enemy in 1385. D. João I donated the Monastery to the Dominicans in 1388, in the middle of the Catholic Church, this year in that the Portuguese swindler of the Dominican Order was canonically instituted. The first community should have been around the twelve friars, having Fr. Lourenço Lampreia as their first prior.
