The old bridge over the river Main was constructed in the 15th century. Until the year 1886 this was the only bridge over the river Main in the city of Würzburg. Up to the 18th century the bridge was militaryly embattled. The famous twelve statues on the bridge were added in 1728/29. Pipinus was a king of the Franks and father of Charlemagne. St. Totnan is one of the Apostles of the Francs.
