Shiretoko goko lakes at Hokkaido, Japan (Okotsuku observetory)
Hokkaido
Shiretoko Goko Lakes refers to the five lakes in Shiretoko National Park. The five lakes are not specifically named and are referred to by number (Lake One, Lake Two, etc.). Because the lakes are located in the wetlands, there is a promenade provided for people who want to take a walk near the lakes. The view of ‘’Lake One’’ from the promenade and observatory was selected as one of 8 beautiful sites of Shiretoko and the mysterious scene of Lake One, which has no river flowing into it) draws many tourists. The promenade has two routes. The first goes along the elevated boardwalk and to the observatory, the second goes around all five lakes. The boardwalk and observatory route takes 40 minutes roundtrip, the route around the five lakes takes 90 minutes roundtrip. Visitors are encouraged to choose the route depending on their time availability and health. Yezo squirrel and Yezo deer can be seen on these walks. However, there are also frequent sightings of brown bears. Please note, when a brown bear is sighted, the promenade is closed and visitors are prohibited from walking along it.
