Silica Dome, Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
Nevada

Silica Dome is the finest example of a Valley of Fire sandstone formation whose grains are nearly 100% silica. The changes from white to red at the base of the dome are due to small quantities of iron which produce a rust-like stain. Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest park in Nevada. Located 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, it is an easily accessible and popular hiking destination.
