Shasta Lake - Bridge Bay
California

Looking at Shasta Lake during mid-level from the Bridge Bay Resort north of Redding, California.  When water level is low the land connects to nearby Beaver Island.  In the distance one can see the Pit River Bridge & North Gray Rocks which is limestone karst where Lake Shasta Caverns are located.  The Pit River Bridge is where Interstate 5 crosses, as does the Union Pacific Railroad underneath.  It was built in 1942 & spans 3,588 feet, having a height of over 500 feet, making it the highest double-decked bridge in the country, though the height of the reservoir diminishes that statistic.

The bridge is also the site of a famous photograph called "Rescue on Pit River Bridge", which was taken on May 3, 1953 by Virginia Schau who was on a fishing trip when she witnessed a semi truck that had spun out of control as the cab went over the railing & dangled off the edge.  Rescuers were able to lower a rope & hoist the two men aboard up & to safety, to which a few moments later the cab broke, crashing & burning below.  Schau became the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in Photography in 1954.
