Gelnhausen Marienkirche Langhaus
Germany

Stylistically, the building is classified as a "Romanesque-Gothic transitional architectural style". Apart from the older west tower and a few later additions, the main structure combines both late Romanesque and early Gothic architectural forms at the same time when it was erected in the first half of the 13th century. The proportion of more ornate Gothic style elements increases from west to east, resulting in an attractive programmatic increase from the simple entrance hall in the west tower to the richly decorated choir when entering the church.

This and the fact that the medieval building remained largely unchanged in its originality and special design make the Marienkirche a cultural monument of particular importance.
In the last third of the 12th century (completion around 1195), the west tower was the first part of the building to be begun, which is still purely Romanesque because of its early construction period.
Between about 1236 and 1240 the main building (with increasing early Gothic styles) was under roof and the church was therefore probably usable. Around 1250 the east towers were also listed at full height and provided with tower helmets. Thus the Marienkirche was already finished after only about 80 years of construction time. Subsequent building activities changed its characteristic appearance only little.

More About Germany

Germany? Before the beginning there was Ginnungagap, an empty space of nothingness, filled with pure creative power. (Sort of like the inside of my head.)And it ends with Ragnarok, the twilight of the Gods. In between is much fighting, betrayal and romance. Just as a good Godly story should be.Heroes have their own graveyard called Valhalla. Unfortunately we cannot show you a panorama of it at this time, nor of the lovely Valkyries who are its escort service.Hail Odin, wandering God wielding wisdom and wand! Hail Freya, hail Tyr, hail Thor!Odin made the many lakes and the fish in them. In his traverses across the lands he caused there to be the Mulheim Bridge in Cologne, as did he make the Mercury fountain, Mercury being of his nature. But it is to the mighty Thor that the Hammering Man gives service.Between the time of the Nordic old ones and that of modern Frankfort there may have been a T.Rex or two on the scene. At least some mastodons for sure came through for lunch, then fell into tar pits to become fossils for us to find. And there we must leave you, O my most pure and holy children.Text by Steve Smith.
