I had a chance to photograph this site while tagging along with a graduate student on her research project. This a bird "kipuka" that located on the slope of Mauna Loa, Hawaii. The site contains many native Hawaiian plants that are not often seen near urbanized areas. The site is currently being studied by the University of Hawaii at Hilo's Tropical Conservation division, monitoring native plants and birds.
