Kirche Schillig

The new St. Mary's Church of dark brick was designed by the Cologne architect Ulrich and Ilse Maria King. The floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross, which is not at right angles, but rounded circumscribed. Thus, the wall surfaces are undulating rhythm. The design of the shaft returns to the roof again, reminiscent of detected approaching and aufbrandende ocean waves. The roof is through large glass surfaces exposes the North Sea to Sky.

The bright interior is dominated by the contrast of the white curved walls to the dark stone floor with traces of fossil marine animals. The sand-colored benches are ordered in a semicircle on the altar. The triangular appended to the main room Marienkapelle, in whose head the image of Mary is, invites for individual devotion.

The bells of the church are from the deconsecrated St. Paul's Church in Oldenburg, the organ from the demolished St.-Ludger Church in Waltrop. Dating from 1967 and designed by the goldsmith atelier Schwerdt + Förster tabernacle of the previous church was taken over again and found its place in an alcove near the altar. The organ builder Friedrich Fleiter created the instrument in 1997. It has 19 stops on two manuals and pedal and is in the French-romantic sound tradition.
