「耳をすませば」ロケ地 - 金比羅宮 こんぴらぐう
Tama

Annual trip to Tokyo, August 2012. A small-ish shrine located some way up Irohazaka in Seiseki Sakuragaoka.

Photo was taken with reference to Whisper of the Heart 耳をすませば (1995 Studio Ghibli movie). This shrine is called Konpira-Gu. The jinja has a very close resemblance to the one which appears in a scene where Sugimura, in the heat of the moment, makes an abrupt and awkward confession to Shizuku of his feelings for her which, unsurprisingly given the suddenness, catches her rather by surprise.

The jinja surroundings in real life, however, are less bushy than as drawn in the movie. Since my previous visit in 2011 the jinja has got itself an omikuji vending machine (a red machine visible by the side of the torii gate). This place must still be popular with visitors!

More About Tama

Tama area is the name of the western part of Tokyo Metropolis.  It consists of 26 cities, 3 towns and a village.  A lot of people (about 4 milion) live in a eastern half part of the area.  However, there are many mountains in the western part of Tama area, and there are very little flat land.  Many hiking spots are in the western area, so you can enjoy walking on the trail, camping, and so on.  If you see the beautiful mountain scene, you may not believe this is also in Tokyo.
