The ruins of Strata Florida Abbey, Pontrhydfendigaid
Wales

The remains of Strata Florida Abbey, a Cistercian house that translates from Latin as the Vale of Flowers. During the Middle Ages it was the most famous church in Wales, after St. Davids. As such, it is the burial site of many Welsh princes.

It flourished as a religious and cultural centre throughout the 13th and 14th centuries until, like all other abbeys and monasteries in Britain, it fell victim to Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries Act in the 1540s.
