This is a lowland heather moor at Hampton Ridge, near Frogham which has existed for some 14,000 years. The sandy soil is too infertile to support cultivation. Because the soil does not retain water, these areas experience droughts which, fuelled by the resin-rich vegetation, lead to fires.
