Vernon Mine - upper adit ore chute
California

The Vernon Mine is an abandoned gold mine north of Yreka, California.  I have found very little information on this mine.  This was taken inside the upper adit facing an unexpected ore chute w/ a few pencil markings indicating measurements.  This level dead ends shortly facing a flooded winze & large stope leading up to a visible air shaft w/ leftover workings.  The stope is where the quartz vein existed, where gold would be extracted by the miners.  The ore would be dropped & funneled into the ore chute which was secured by a wooden slat.  The slat would be raised & ore would drop into the ore bins which would be loaded & hauled out of the mine on the rails, sometimes by mules.  There is evidence of old ore cart tracks at this level however they are long gone (I presume many of the metals were scrapped & needed during WWII) except for the timber crossties & there has been ongoing unstable collapse of the walls & ceiling making original features of the tunnel not so distinct.  Outside is a large tailings pile & wooden remains of a stamp mill.
