Woudrichem, Fortress City, The Netherlands
Netherlands
Woudrichem originated in the ninth century. A marketplace was created on a bank wall, where the Hoogstraat and Molenstraat are now located. Around the year 1000, mostly north of the Alm, a number of settlements focused on Woudrichem. The Maas did not initially flow past Woudrichem. The main stream of this river first flowed roughly through the bed of the current Bergsche Maas, later the Alm was the main stream, and still later the current Afgedamde Maas, until in 1904 the Bergsche Maas was dug. Woudrichem was strategically located at the confluence of Maas and Waal in the sphere of influence of both the Duchy of Brabant, Gelre and the County of Holland. In 1322, the Land of Altena was added to the County of Holland, only to be assigned to the newly formed province of Noord-Brabant in 1815. In the fourteenth century the city had grown so much that in 1356 the Lord of Altena, William VII of Horne, granted city rights to Woudrichem. In the same year, the Count of Holland moved the burial river toll of Nobody's friend, located in Sliedrecht, to Woudrichem. Because of this and other privileges, such as the fishing rights from 1362 - granted by Dirk Loef van Horne, builder of Slot Loevestein - the place flourished.
