The Iasi Jewish Cemetery (Cimitirul evreiesc in Romanian) was consecrated in 1881. Per the decree of the WWII president, Antonescu, over 100,000 bodies going back to the 1400's in the old Jewish cemetery were removed and placed here in mass graves. In June of 1941 following Hitler's attack on the Soviet Union, a Pogrom was enacted in Iasi following Antonescu's orders to rid the country of Jews. Over 13,000 victims of that Pogrom died in a few days and are buried here in a mass grave. They were shot or clubbed by the thousands at the police station. While others were packed into railroad cars with no food or water. In the hot sun, they rode for days and days between towns until most were dead.
