Queluz Palace, Palácio de Queluz, Room of the Ambassadors
Lisbon
The National Palace of Queluz is an 18th century palace located in the city of Queluz in the municipality of Sintra, Lisbon district. One of the last large rococo-style buildings erected in Europe, the palace was built as a summer nook for D. Pedro de Bragança, who later became the husband and king consort of his niece, Queen D. Maria I of Portugal . The aesthetic party is oblivious to the rational classicism of the Enlightenment represented by Pombal, especially after the action following the earthquake of 1755. The turning of the preferential destination of the palace takes place when the marriage of D.Pedro III with D.Maria I, the The palace is forced to assume state functions and has to adapt to that effect, in view of the ceremonial court and the stay of the royal family. Some of the rooms adopt the current designation after the functional transformation, among them the Room of the Ambassadors (old Great Room) and the Room of the Throne (old Sala Oval) transformed in 1768-1770.
