海芋原產於南非的泥沼地，早期被當做野草並拿來餵豬，當地人稱之為豬草。所幸後來被引入歐洲栽培，才得以搖身一變而成為今日的世界名花。

竹子湖海芋由日本引進，在竹子湖找到真正的家；海芋有個優美的正式名稱叫做「馬蹄蓮」，這是因為它的苞片盛開時有如倒立的馬蹄，而植株又如同蓮花般生長在水中。
