长沙贺龙体育中心是全国第一座以国家领导人——贺龙元帅名字命名的大型综合性体育场所。她始建于1951年，时名长沙劳动人民体育场，1984年更名为长沙市体育场。1986年长沙市政府投资二千多万元对体育场进行改建，1987年更名为长沙贺龙体育场。2000年12月28日为迎接全国第五届城市运动会在我市胜利召开，长沙市委、市政府决定对贺龙体育场进行高起点、高标准、高质量改扩建。经过长沙市五城会指挥部、各建筑施工单位的建设者们三年多的艰苦拼搏，投资近五个亿的体育场改扩建工程于2003年9月竣工，并正式更名为长沙贺龙体育中心。
