Mumbles Head
Wales

Mumbles Head with the pier and lighthouse. To the right of the lighthouse is Bracelet Bay and Tutt Head with the Swansea Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre which covers the area from Marsland Mouth in Cornwall to the River Towy in Carmarthenshire. Beyond Tutt Head is Limeslade bay and onwards around the coast of the unspoiled Gower Peninsular. The pier built in 1898 will possibly be renovated if current development plans are agreed. The pier is famous as being the terminus of the Mumbles Railway, the worlds first passenger carrying railway. It was opened by act of Parliament in 1804 and closed in January 1960. Attached to the pier is the RNLI Lifeboat station which opened in 1935 and currently houses a Tyne Class Lifeboat - ON-1127 – named Babs & Agnes Robertson. The lighthouse, on the outer of the two small islands, was built in 1794. With the lighthouse there are the remains of a fort or gun battery which was built in 1860. The Bristol Channel has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world at 10m. Across the Bristol Channel can be seen the coast of Devon some 24 miles away.
