The former site of Shajiao Fort refer to those located on Shajiao Mountain on the east coast of Humen seaport. It was built in 1800 and was renamed Liaowang Fort in 1834. The fort was destroyed by the British forces during the First Opium War (1839 to 1842) but repaired after the war. It was however, destroyed again by British forces in 1865. The Qing army carried out repairs and expanded the fort sysem between 1883 and 1889 building 10 forts, the fort arranged on the mountain and facing the sea forming the complex Shajiao Fort. Here on the western side, you see 3 open air gun emplacements of the Binhai Fort looking out to sea. Additionally there is a statue of Lin Zexu and a bronze statue of General Chen Liansheng’s horse - "The Devoted Horse Statue".
