天燈由來傳說盛多，相傳天燈是諸葛亮為傳遞軍情所創，又稱孔明燈；還有一項說法是，清道光年間，大陸福建移民將施放天燈的習俗傳入新北市平溪區十分寮地區為躲避盜匪，民眾互報平安施放信號，而稱為祈福燈或平安燈。
