Barlow Wagon Road
Mount Hood

The Barlow Road is a historic pioneer wagon road that cuts to the south of Mt. Hood, Oregon.  Part of the 2,000 mile Oregon Trail, the final journey from The Dalles to Oregon City consisted of rafting the Columbia River through the gorge & into the Willamette Valley.  Sam Barlow, who saw the backup of families waiting for river transport, sought an alternative cheaper travel route & established the Barlow Road in 1845.  The road goes south of The Dalles to Tygh Valley, then west over Barlow Pass through here & down to the Willamette.  Today one can still see the old remnants of the wagon road, such as here where the depression & stacked rocks in the ground show where it crossed the East Fork Salmon River.
