Microbialites of Bridger Bay 01, Antelope Island State Park, Utah USA
Utah

Microbialite is a form of rock created through the action of microbes similar to the generation of coral.  Unlike coral, this rock is not directly a part of the organism but more a side effect.  Ancient versions of these microbes are thought to be responsible for pulling carbon out of circulation and shifting the earth's ancient atmosphere toward a higher oxygen concentration.  These microbes were then outcompeted by later lifeforms.  Today, they primarily exist in extreme environments like the highly saline Great Salt Lake, where other organisms cannot compete with them.
