Mid-level corridor inside Bai Harir Stepwell, Ahmedabad, India
India

Located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, Dada Harir Stepwell is a stunning example of medieval water architecture. Constructed in 1499, the stepwell was designed by Dhai Harir to provide water to the residents of the city. The well’s five descending levels are supported by an array of beautifully carved pillars, with each level providing access to the water table. The well’s octagonal shape makes it unique among other stepwells in the region.

The craftsmanship is a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, evident in the geometric designs and floral patterns that adorn the stone walls and columns. In addition to serving as a functional water source, the stepwell acted as a community space where people could cool off during the hot months and socialize.
