硫磺谷富含硫磺成份的水質將行進過的岩石染上一抹乳白色，水質為弱鹼性碳酸氫類泉。

本區舊名大磺嘴，為清人郁永河採硫遺址（西元1697年），有豐富的火山碎屑岩和沉積岩地質地形及人文景觀。冬季山區陰雨綿綿時，本區因地處背風面，天候狀況較陽明山國家公園的其他遊憩據點為佳。

谷地長約1公里，寬約80至200公尺，谷內有多處噴氣孔、硫氣孔和地熱溫泉，白煙繚繞，熱氣滾滾，一縷縷自谷地升起，頗為壯觀，是北投溫泉的源頭。
