Glenn Memorial Methodist Church, at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia 1
Atlanta
Built in 1931, the Sanctuary of the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Glenn Memorial was built in 1931 for both the congregation and as an auditorium for Emory University. It includes a balcony, and seats 1,400 people. In addition to being our worship home, the sanctuary hosts other services of various faiths and denominations that are sponsored by Emory University’s Office of Religious Life and by the Candler School of Theology. Like Glenn Memorial’s Little Chapel, the sanctuary was designed by renowned Atlanta architect Philip Shutze. Special programs regularly draw large audiences to the auditorium, including performances by visiting artists, Emory student events, and addresses by speakers of national and international importance.

Capital and largest city in Georgia, Atlanta is known the world over for its parks, professional sports teams, shopping, museums, and entertainment. One of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Atlanta has been commended by the Environmental Protection Agency for its determination to implement ecologically friendly policies. Unlike many other Southern cities, Atlanta broke with its historic Old South architectural characteristics and opted for a progressive modern style led by native Atlantan John Portman, who created the atrium hotel in 1967 when he designed the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
