Namrun Fortress Camliyayla Vr Mersin 326
Turkey
Namrun fortress, one of the most famous fortresses in the region and dated to the Middle Age, is located in downtown Çamlıyayla District, Mersin. It was known in the Hittite and Assyrian Periods as “Illibru”. The fortress is accessed through partially destructed staircase. Two of the turrets on the northern part are intact while most of its extensions are completely collapsed. Namrun was built on a junction of mountainous valleys, at a very beautiful and strategically important point overlooking both the south and the north. Sinap Fortress can easily be seen from Namrun. There is an access gate where roads to Gulek from Sinap, and from Bulgar Mountain to Ulukışla intersect, and one of the roads leading south turns west and arrives at Çandır while the other joins the highway leading to Pozantı and Cappadocia. The strategic importance of Namrun Fortress is due to the role it played in protecting the Cilician Gates located above Gulek Fortress. Hethums ruled the region for a long time. At the end of the 14th century, a Memluk garrison was established in the region for a short period of time.
