Lake Mombeong
Victoria

Located in Discovery Bay National park in SW Victoria, this beautiful fresh water lake sits behind the sand dunes where the Southern Ocean breaks onto the shore.

It is a haven for bird life, and also has a popular camping and picnic area.

Non powered boating is permitted on the lake, and an early morning paddle is a real treat.

Two threatened birds, the Hooded Plover and Little Tern, nest on the beaches.

The Ground Parrot, Australasian Bittern and Brolga frequent the wetlands

while the Orange-bellied Parrot, Rufous Bristlebird, Striated Field wren and

Beautiful Firetail have been recorded in the dunes and shrublands.

The lake forms part of the Great South West Walk, a 250km walking trail that starts and finishes in Portland.

The GSWW has been described as a symphony in four parts, comprising

1) A forest section,
2) A river section,
3) A beach and lakes section
4) Rocky Headland and cliffs

The lake has had many names over the years, including Lake Bung Bung, Lake Bong Bong and Lake Monibeong
