Saas Grund Cemetery and Saint's Chapel
Switzerland

After the new parish church was completed in 1938, the old church remained until 1948. Only then was it demolished except for the tower. The tower was slightly redesigned, and adorned with a statue of Saint Joseph, patron saint of the dying, and converted into a cemetery chapel with a small porch, where the dead are still laid out today. It is part of the mourning culture in the Saas Valley that the bodies of the deceased are exposed on the eve of the funeral. This takes place in the chapels of the cemeteries of Saas Grund, Saas Fee and Saas Balen.
