time ball tower Södermalm Stockholm
Sweden

This image is an alternative take for my contribution to

www.worldwidepanorama.org event "time"

Time balls were important maritime devices for keeping accurate time on ships. Teh balls is raised 5 minutes before noon GMT and falls at noonexatcly . The size and placement must be suitable for viewing from ships.

Stockholm considering itself as a major harbor has one Time ball tower .

It was fully operational from until June 1936, but rebuild again in 1987 .

It is controlled now by long wave time signal from Mainflingen in Germany ( atom clock ) and falls every day at 1 o'clock PM .

Ersta – Sköndal Högskola resides in the building / ( thank you for giving me access to the tower )

1906-1982 it was a building of Stockholms Naval Academy

Time ball tradition is closely inspected by Stockholm City hall and school management gets immediate telephone call if there is some malfunction with the mechanism .

While on the top of the tower I took a hires zoom able image of the view .
