Ortzanzurieta passed the Camino de Santiago from France to Navarra.
Northern Spain
Conforms around a well-differentiated mountain range between the Port of Ibañeta (1,057 m) and the Arnostegi pass (1,230 m), where it connects with Mount Urkulu (1,419 m). The most outstanding peaks are Ortzantzurieta At the foot of the mountain is the famous collegiate church of Orreaga / Roncesvalles (952 m). Already the Romans crossed the Pyrenees through these high ports as proof of the existence of a trophy tower on the top of Urkulu, elevated there for the glory of the empire. It was they who named when talking about these places coined the name Summum Pyreneus. The best known episode occurred is that of the battle of Roncesvalles, although some historians have come to locate the stage farther east. It took place in 778 when Charlemagne's rearguard was suddenly attacked by Basque tribes in revenge for the company that had riddled Charlemagne himself in Pamplona by destroying the walls that defended it. From the S.IX the pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela begin to see the remains of the saint. In this way the Pyrenean steps begin to be frequented by the faithful who come from the most remote in Europe. For this reason, a hermitage dedicated to Santiago in Roncesvalles is created, and a pilgrim hospital is created. In the Alto de Ibañeta (1,057 m) there is a monument commemorating the battle of Roncesvalles although there are also trenches and bunkers of more recent contests (civil war). At that point starts a lane that allows you to reach the top.
