A 400' aerial view overlooking Autzen Stadium on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. Home to the Oregon Ducks, the stadium was opened in 1967 w/ a seating capacity of nearly 60,000 people. This view also shows the location of a relatively forgotten shooting that took place here on November 12, 1984. The perpetrator, Michael Evan Feher, a 19 year-old freshman majoring in psychology, was struggling w/ financial & mental issues as he arrived armed with a stolen high-powered rifle and a shotgun. A few months earlier in August, he had arrived at the stadium alone & had slit his wrists however he would later stagger to a nearby hospital for treatment. After counseling & therapy as well as a breakup w/ a girlfriend, he would return here a few months later. On the day of the shooting, he shot and injured Oregon wrestler Rick O'Shea at 8:30 a.m. Feher roamed Autzen for another hour, shooting at random. He even fired toward a policeman but missed. At 11 a.m., police raided the weight room and evacuated 10 people. At some point around 11:30, the body of 35-year-old Christopher Brathwaite was found along Pre's Trail 100 yards away in nearby Alton Baker Park. The former Olympic track athlete once competed at the UO & was a sprinter for the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic teams in 1976 & 1980. The incident came to a close when a police team discovered Feher's body from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the stadium around noon, 3.5 hours after the shooting began. The scene in this view has changed somewhat since the time of the shooting. The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
