On Saturday, November 24th, 1973 a US Navy DC Airplane had to do an emergency landing on the black sandy beach of Sólheimasandur in Iceland. Luckily everyone survived the crash. Instead of recovering the plane, the wreckage was left behind on the black beach causing some very dramatic sights.
This photo was taken close to the wreck looking overlooking the surrounding black sand beach. On one side, you can see the wreckage, whereas on the other side, you can see the dramatic landscapes surrounding the black sand beach.
In order to get to the plane, you need to hike through the sandy beach or take a beach-worthy vehicle as the other visitors did.
